MINI MIGMAT AT THE MONTY Programme announced
We are thrilled to announce the launch of Mini MigMat, a brand-new children’s festival set to take place at The Montgomery this month. This exciting event will bring a vibrant mix of theatre performances and workshops, handpicked by young people themselves, to the city.
Mini MigMat is part of the wider Migration Matters Festival, a celebration of the positive impact of migration and the largest event of its kind in the country. Running from June 16th to 24th, this festival aims to engage young people in the migration conversation and provide a platform for them to share their own experiences.
The festival will feature an array of captivating events and performances, with something for every child to enjoy. The two day long mini festival promises to be an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
One of the highlights of the festival is “The Bull And The Moon,” on the 17th June at 11am, a heartwarming tale about a young bull with dreams of becoming a flamenco dancing cow. This delightful theatre production will captivate young imaginations and inspire them to follow their own aspirations.
Another notable event is a creative talent show symbolising resilience and a love for Sheffield which will take place in the evening of the 17th. This showcase will provide a platform for young performers to express themselves and demonstrate their artistic abilities.
Mini MigMat has been co-curated with our partnership project the Youth Theatre of Sanctuary, in collaboration with Stand and Be Counted Theatre and The Montgomery. The shows featured in the programme were carefully selected by young members of the youth theatre, ensuring that the festival reflects the interests and preferences of its target audience.
In addition to the performances at The Montgomery, the festival extends beyond the theatre walls. Stand and Be Counted Theatre is bringing back the immersive story audio trail called “Secret Summer” in Heeley People’s Park on Saturday, June 24th. This free outdoor experience invites families to embark on a magical adventure through the park, offering a fresh perspective on the space and its significance.
Moreover, on the same day, there will be more children’s theatre taking place outdoors at the South Street Park Amphitheatre. Little Bean Theatre, known for their multilingual productions, will be among the featured artists, ensuring a truly diverse and engaging experience.
Firas Chihi, the community director at Stand and Be Counted Theatre, expressed his excitement about the return of Secret Summer and the launch of Mini MigMat. He emphasised the importance of providing opportunities for young people seeking sanctuary to explore creativity, new technology, and foster their dreams.
Migration Matters Festival is dedicated to showcasing the richness of cultural diversity and promoting inclusivity in society. With over 60 pay-as-you-feel arts events, this year’s festival promises to be a fantastic celebration of talent and community spirit.
Sarah Sharp from The Montgomery expressed her enthusiasm about joining forces with Migration Matters Festival and Stand and Be Counted to introduce Mini MigMat. She is excited about the role of the Youth Theatre of Sanctuary played in curating this year’s lineup and encouraged audiences to participate in these high-quality events designed for children and young people.
