Set in late 19th century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers facing the turmoil of adolescent sexuality. An angsty rock musical adaptation of the seminal play abut the trails and tribulations of growing up.

Join this group of late 19th century German students on their passage as they navigate teenage self-discovery and coming of age anxiety, in a powerful celebration of youth and rebellion in the daring remarkable Spring Awakening.

About the company

Established in 2016, Butter Side Up Theatre Company prides itself on being an amateur performing arts group that welcomes everyone.

Since day one, we’ve offered members the chance to perform, as well as to try their hand at backstage work, directing, writing, film-making, and also the chance to develop skills in a low-pressure environment.

Welcoming members from all walks of life from across Sheffield, Leeds, Derbyshire and more, BSU specialises in original works, comedy collaborations, new takes & adaptations, and championing the works and talents of the LGBTQ+ community.

The Montgomery is currently undergoing redevelopment works to make the building accessible. Access information will be updated in due course.

Public Transport

The nearest tram stop is Cathedral, within 5 minutes’ walk.
Buses stopping at the Arundel Gate interchanges are within 5 minutes’ walk.
Sheffield Train Station is approximately a 10 minute walk from the venue.

By Car

Access to Surrey Street is via Arundel Gate, onto Norfolk Street. A the top of Norfolk Street, turn right. The Montgomery is on the right side, facing the Town Hall.

A loading bay is available immediately in front of the theatre, and hourly on-street parking is available.
